EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It’s a type of therapy that helps your brain process and release experiences that feel stuck–especially things like trauma, stress, or painful memories that still affect how you think, feel, or react today.
A lot of times, we know something is in the past, but our body or emotions don’t fully catch up. EMDR helps bridge that gap. EMDR is a structured, evidence-based therapy but it’s also flexible and collaborative. Here’s what the process typically looks like, broken down into 8 phases:
1 history and treatment planning
We start by getting a clear picture of your story–what’s been weighing on you, where you feel stuck, and what goals you have for therapy. You don’t need to go into every detail–just enough to help us map out a focused plan.
2 preparation
You’ll learn grounding tools and strategies to help you feel safe, steady, and in control before we begin any deeper work. We’ll build trust and make sure you’re fully supported every step of the way.
3 assessment
We identify a specific memory, belief, or pattern that feels emotionally charged. Together, we’ll explore how it shows up in your body, thoughts, and emotions so we can begin reprocessing it with clarity and care.
4 desensitization
This is where the reprocessing happens. Using bilateral stimulation (like eye movements or tapping), your brain begins to unstick the memory and process it more adaptively–reducing the emotional charge it once held.
5 installation
Once the old reactions start to fade, we strengthen a new, more empowering belief that feels true to you–like “I’m safe now” or “I did the best I could.” This helps rewire how you relate to the experience going forward.
6 body scan
We check in with your body to see if any tension or emotional residue is still lingering. EMDR isn’t just about changing thoughts–it’s about full mind-body integration.
7 closure
Each session ends with grounding, regulation, and reflection. Even if reprocessing isn’t fully complete, we make sure you feel stable and supported before you leave.
8 reevaluation
At the start of the next session, we check in on how things have shifted–what’s feeling lighter, what’s still activated–and decide together where to focus next.
Throughout the process, you stay in the driver’s seat.
